“It is not enough to be non-racist; we must be anti-racist.” — Angela Davis
This project was completed with information provided by the Anne Braden Institute for Social Justice Research. It is a redesign of a tour guidebook through historic civil rights landmarks in my hometown of Louisville, touching many different areas of the city. Each section provides location info, photos and information about the history of the building for either a self-guided driving tour or a coffee table read.
I used black, red, and green to echo the Black Liberation/Pan-African Flag, and relied on vintage black & white photographs with a sophisticated serif font and a calming gray cover to really showcase the historical aspect of each landmark and create a feeling of looking into the past through the lens of the present; acknowleding the pain and mistakes while also celebrating the triumph the Black community and anti-racists have achieved through direct action in our community.
“As long as people of color can be written off as expendable, and therefore acceptable victims of the most extreme inequities, none of the basic injustices of our society will be addressed; they will only get worse.” —Anne Braden
